The development of constellations of hundreds or thousands of small satellites is both a cause and a consequence of a radical transformation of the global space industry that has occurred over the past decade. The space industry used to be organized in very hierarchical industrial chains around large prime contractors, most often under public control; it now functions more like a burgeoning industrial ecosystem around highly integrated private operators and infrastructures, most often sponsored by powerful private interests. This transformation took place during the 2010 decade, with a notable acceleration from 2017 onwards. This acceleration corresponds to the first steps in the establishment of the SIRIUS Chair.

The SIRIUS Chair has been designed to study all aspects of this:

  • Industrial strategies
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Financing
  • International legal framework
  • National policies and international governance
  • Regulations and standardization
  • Competition law and market regulation
